The projects here show a range of work, from small extensions and conversions to new homes and sensitive historic buildings. Each scheme responds to its site, planning context and client needs, with careful consideration given to both design and buildability.

New Family Home, Preston

This project began as a proposal to convert an agricultural barn under permitted development, before evolving into a full planning application for a new family home. The central challenge was to create a contemporary, energy‑efficient house that responds sensitively to its rural setting while satisfying planning requirements. The final design delivers generous living space through a clear, restrained architectural approach, well suited to the practicalities of a self‑build construction process.

The completed property achieves an exceptional standard of thermal performance, incorporating an air source heat pump and roof‑mounted solar panels to provide efficient, low‑carbon heating and energy generation.

Extension to Grade II Listed Home

Working within the constraints of a Grade II listed building, this project required a careful and measured approach to both design and planning. The aim was to improve the functionality of the house without compromising its historic character or significance.

Proposals were developed to sit comfortably alongside the original building, with particular attention paid to scale, materials and detailing. Close engagement with planning and conservation requirements ensured that the extension enhanced the existing property while respecting its listed status.

We have more recently also gained planning permission for a new garage/workshop building in the grounds.

Barn Conversion into four homes

Under permitted development legislation, we secured approval to convert an existing agricultural barn into four distinctive homes. The original timber structure has been carefully preserved, allowing its character to be experienced throughout each property. The main living spaces rise to the full height of the barn, creating generous, light‑filled interiors, while the bedrooms are illuminated by rooflights that bring in soft, natural daylight from above.

Design proposals were developed to respond to the surrounding landscape and existing buildings, with an emphasis on clarity, buildability and long‑term practicality. Thoughtful planning‑led design helped shape a scheme appropriate to its setting.

Small Barn Conversion

This project involved the conversion of a modest barn into habitable accommodation, requiring a clear understanding of both planning policy and construction limitations. The challenge lay in adapting the existing structure while creating a practical and well‑proportioned internal layout.

The design focused on making efficient use of the available volume, retaining the simplicity of the original form and responding sensitively to its setting. Early planning guidance and clear drawings helped establish a viable route from concept to approval. The original timber stable structure has been left exposed, bringing warmth and natural texture to the interior and preserving the building’s rural character.

Refurbishment of Grade II Listed Chapel

The Chapel, which had long been used for storing apples and was in disrepair, has been thoughtfully restored and brought back to life. The clients were committed to using natural, sustainable materials and the building needed to breathe, so the envelope was upgraded with wood‑fibre and sheep’s‑wool insulation. Existing finishes and fittings were repaired, complemented by new windows and the reinstatement of the original wood panelling. The result is a unique, characterful space that is perfect for entertaining family and friends!

Single storey side & rear extension

A glazed side extension to the existing kitchen creates a bright and spacious kitchen–dining area with views over the garden of this home in the countryside. At the rear of the house, a further extension provides a comfortable, accessible ground‑floor guest room with its own en‑suite. The clients are a pleasure to work with, and we are now collaborating on our ninth project together.
